The PodScape

The DEEDS ´PodScape´ is a pilot project for an open-source, web-based platform that allows design educators and design professionals to exchange ideas, knowledge, good practice, Teaching & Learning resources – a ´wikipedoria´ for Design, Education and Sustainability.

The vision for the project is to develop an online resource that is dynamic, informative and widely accessible; a platform that encourages sharing and facilitates cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary research and development in sustainable design education. DESIGN OF THE WEEK

Design discipline: PRODUCT: Fashion/clothing/shoe design
Product/project name: Teko

Description: Walking and mountaineering aficionados know the value of a good pair of socks. Perhaps few consider the ecological and ethical considerations. Not so Teko, whose company philosophy is built around sustainable manufacturing.

According to Teko, ‘Sustainability means a product can be assembled, taken apart, and put together again without needing extra parts or sacrificing quality and purity. A major part of "playing by the rules" of sustainable manufacturing is that all by-products, wasted, or modified materials that are leftover cannot be forgotten. Rather, they are considered to be a part of the final product

(though not physically attached or passed on to the end-user.) This makes choosing the right processes and materials even more necessary.’

High performance socks are engineered from materials that minimise their impact on the environment. Fibres include merino wool from a holistically managed farm in Tazmania, Ingeo a bio-fibre made from poly lactic acid (PLA) derived from corn plants, recycled polyester (PET from water bottles) and organic cotton (grown without pesticides). Non-toxic dyes exceed European Oekotex 100 standards. These socks are modern, functional, colourful and ethical. Look after your feet while treading lightly on the planet.
